Arriving in Iceland
We flew on the Sunday flight, arrived in Reykjavik. Off the plane, through Passport Control and then onto our Covid tests (ouch thatâs not pleasant, sure the thing she put up my nose had some of my Brain on it when she pulled it out). Still, it took about a minute to complete, get the bags and ready to go in less than 20 minutes from leaving the Plane.
Went to the Car Rental Shuttle stop, waited 35 minutes, no shuttle. Back into deserted airport, find out there are no shuttles. Walk in the rain to the Thrifty depot. The lady says she just got in, didnât need any paperwork as I was the only booking for the day and she was going home as soon as I left. Everything pre-paid via CarRentals.com but paid an extra £7 per day for a portable wifi dongle. Cheaper than my data cHarges and can connect 10 devices. Also small enough to keep in my pocket so wifi everywhere. Also, quicker than the wifi in the apartment.
No Car Rental shuttles, no Bus transfers to the city. So arrange a transfer via a private hire company or get a taxi, those seem to be the only options other than car rental.
Got the car, drove into the city which took about 40 minutes. Our apartment was in Laugervegur which is the old city centre. A good location but the most expensive for parking. Reykjavik has 4 levels of parking and maps are available online. There are areas of free parking but this means a walk to the centre. But parking is free everywhere from 6pm until 9am, after 9am it costs about £18.00 per day in level 1. We always found a parking space close to the apartment.
We are here.
