Quarantine - Day 1.
Icelandâs Golden Circle is within easy reach of Reykjavik and we decided to drive there and see some popular sites. About 90 minutes driving takes you right into the heart of the region. We knew we had to stay away from other people but suspected there would be few people there. We were prepared to come straight back had we been wrong, but at our first stop, The Geysir Geothermal area, the car parks were empty. We saw one other couple so maintaining social distancing of 2 metres was easy. Two years ago we drove straight past Geysir as all the car parks were full and there were thousands of people there.
Gullfoss (translation = Golden Falls) Â is just a few miles up the road and one of the most popular tourist spots in Iceland and was our next stop. Again, we saw only two other people. Iceland really is empty.
Then a drive back down the road past Geysir, just past road 355 (on the left) and just before a small bridge over the Bruar river is the small car park for Bruarfoss (on the right). The hike to the falls is about an hour but its an easy one. I have done it in February and the trail was icy but in Summer and Autumn it really is a walk in the park.
Heading back to Reykjavik on the 37, we took the right turn just past Laugarvatn onto the 365. This took us just north of lake Pingvallavatn to the 36. There are some great views along this route. Just before we reached Mosfellsbaer, we spotted an unusual Church on the right. This was Mosfellskirkja.
